Nifty slips 0.12% as Tata Motors PV, metals weigh on a cautious session
Early geopolitical pressure eased, but weak auto and metal names offset support from telecom, infrastructure and select earnings winners.
The session was defined by a tug-of-war between domestic institutional support and foreign-flow, crude and geopolitical risks. Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles’ sharp profit decline and margin warning were the clearest company-specific negative, while stronger results at Honasa Consumer and Indigo Paints encouraged selective buying. The market’s next direction is likely to remain sensitive to crude, the rupee, institutional flows and the remaining earnings announcements.

The session
A narrow recovery after an early sell-off
Indian equities finished a volatile session close to flat, after an early sell-off linked to Middle East uncertainty and foreign-investor pressure. The market recovered much of its intraday weakness as domestic institutions provided support, but the rebound was not broad enough to overcome pressure in selected large-cap names.
The main stock-specific drag came from Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles. Its first-quarter consolidated profit fell 80.2% year on year to ₹775 crore, despite revenue growth of 9.3% to ₹95,799 crore. Management said commodity-related cost pressures would persist into the second quarter, while first-quarter margins at Jaguar Land Rover and the domestic passenger-vehicle business were below analysts’ expectations.

Key drivers
Stock-specific rotation shaped the close
Bharti Airtel was a prominent large-cap support, while Adani Ports also advanced, helping explain the relative strength in telecom and infrastructure-linked counters. Apollo Hospitals was among the stronger healthcare names. These gains provided selective index support rather than signalling a broad-based risk-on move.
Metals remained under pressure, with Tata Steel and Hindalco among the notable laggards. Oil and energy stocks faced the continuing sensitivity to crude and Middle East supply risks. Cement counters were also weighed by UltraTech Cement, where a large promoter block deal added supply overhang even though institutional demand absorbed the transaction.
Banking performance was mixed. Bajaj Finance and some private-sector lenders offered support, but weakness in selected financial names, including SBI and Jio Financial, kept Bank Nifty performance subdued. The pattern was one of stock-specific rotation rather than a decisive shift in market direction.
Indian markets
WPI eases, while regulators focus on market structure
The principal domestic macro release was July wholesale-price inflation, which eased marginally to 9.78% from 9.87% in June. The moderation was attributed to the fuel and power group, while inflation in the other major groups increased from the previous month. That mix matters for Indian equities because a softer headline alone does not remove concerns about input costs for manufacturers and consumer-facing companies.
The RBI Governor and the finance minister co-chaired the BRICS Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors meeting in Jaipur. The RBI highlighted the role of central banks in maintaining price and financial stability and the importance of cooperation in building a resilient financial system.
SEBI was reported to be considering changes to the SME-IPO framework, including higher market-value thresholds, revised market-making and underwriting rules, and changes to lot sizes and offer-for-sale provisions. A consultation paper was expected the following week. If taken forward, the proposals could affect the route smaller companies use to access public capital and the liquidity structure of SME listings.
Currency, commodities & rates
Global relief was outweighed by geopolitical and flow concerns
Global cues were relatively more supportive than the domestic close suggested. Softer US wholesale-inflation data reduced expectations of a September Federal Reserve rate increase, contributing to lower US Treasury yields and firmer Asian risk sentiment. The dollar was little changed against major currencies in the available global-market reports.
The improvement in global risk appetite was offset in India by the unresolved US-Iran standoff. Crude remained a key sensitivity for an oil-importing economy: even after the previous session’s fall, supply disruption concerns continued to influence the rupee, energy shares and inflation expectations.
The latest available institutional-flow data, for August 13, showed foreign investors as net sellers of ₹510.69 crore and domestic institutions as net buyers of ₹4,353.09 crore. The contrast explains why domestic liquidity cushioned the market even as foreign selling and geopolitical risk limited the upside.
Companies
Results rewarded revenue and profit quality selectively
The earnings slate remained mixed. Indigo Paints reported a 61% increase in quarterly profit to ₹41.7 crore and a 19.7% rise in revenue to ₹369.7 crore, while Honasa Consumer reported its highest-ever quarterly profit of ₹90.4 crore, up 116.5% year on year. These results supported interest in selected consumer and healthcare-related names.
JSW Cement reported consolidated net profit of ₹160.6 crore against a loss of ₹1,356.2 crore in the year-ago quarter, with revenue rising 21.6% to ₹1,896.4 crore. However, EBITDA declined 7.5% and the margin narrowed to 15.7% from 20.7%, illustrating why stronger reported profit did not automatically translate into broad strength across materials stocks.
Ashok Leyland reported a 1.5% increase in quarterly net profit to ₹667.77 crore, with record commercial-vehicle sales and revenue growth cited in market reports. The results due later in the day included several industrial, pharmaceutical, defence and infrastructure companies, leaving scope for further company-specific volatility after the broader earnings season.
What matters next
IPO activity and blocks kept liquidity in focus
Primary-market activity remained an important liquidity event. Several SME issues opened, while the Behari Lal Engineering and Shiprocket offerings reached their final subscription day; Technocraft Ventures and LEAP India also listed. The flow of new issues can draw attention and capital away from secondary-market trading, particularly when benchmark participation is already selective.
The UltraTech Cement block and stake sales in Thyrocare and Urban Company added sizeable institutional activity beneath the headline index moves. Such transactions can alter near-term supply-demand dynamics in individual stocks without necessarily changing the broader market trend.
