Nifty slips 0.39% as West Asia tensions, MSCI reshuffle weigh on Indian equities
A strong Q1 growth print offers domestic support, but oil, global yields, index rebalancing and foreign selling remain the immediate market tests.
The August 31 session reflected a clash between resilient domestic growth and worsening external risk. West Asia tensions, crude above $90 a barrel, higher US yields and MSCI-related flows weighed on the benchmarks, while private banks, selected large caps and stock-specific buying limited the decline. India’s 7.8% first-quarter GDP growth exceeded both the RBI estimate and the reported consensus forecast, but the market’s next test is whether that domestic strength can absorb pressure from energy prices, global rates and renewed foreign selling.

The session
Indian equities ended lower on August 31 as renewed US-Iran hostilities pushed crude above $90 a barrel and increased concern about imported inflation. Traders also cited higher US bond yields and renewed expectations of a US rate increase after hawkish comments from Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh.
The session was unusually sensitive to market structure. MSCI index changes took effect on September 1, while index-linked funds adjusted portfolios in the August 31 close under the new closing-auction mechanism. Market participants attributed the sharp moves in several large-cap names, particularly Adani stocks, to those rebalancing flows rather than to a broad change in company fundamentals.
The decline from intraday lows was supported by selective buying in private banks, pharmaceuticals and some large companies. The immediate implication for the September 1 session is that global risk cues and the residual effect of index rebalancing may remain more important than the headline close, while the strong domestic growth data released after market hours provides a counterweight.

Key drivers
What drove the session
Adani Enterprises and Adani Ports were among the biggest drags after MSCI-related selling, while Tata Steel and Infosys added to pressure in metals and technology. HDFC Bank also weighed on the benchmarks after giving up early gains; the stock had opened higher following the announcement that Managing Director and Chief Executive Sashidhar Jagdishan would retire on October 26, 2026, and would not seek reappointment.
ICICI Bank, Reliance Industries, Grasim, Bajaj Auto and Mahindra & Mahindra provided support. ICICI Bank was among the strongest large-cap gainers, while private-bank buying helped the banking index outperform the broader benchmarks. The banking index’s closing strength was also amplified by the closing-auction adjustment, which left its final level materially above the level seen earlier in the session.
Auto stocks attracted interest ahead of August sales announcements, while the energy complex was relatively resilient despite the rise in crude. The weakness in metals reflected both the risk-off global backdrop and stock-specific selling, while infrastructure and industrial names were affected by the broader liquidation in companies exposed to the MSCI changes.
Indian markets
Policy and macro
India’s real GDP grew 7.8% year-on-year in the April-June quarter of financial year 2026-27, according to data released by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation after the market close. The result was above the RBI’s 7% estimate and the 7.1% median forecast reported from a Reuters poll.
The data showed real GDP at Rs 81.36 lakh crore, against Rs 75.46 lakh crore a year earlier. Gross value added grew 8.2% year-on-year, manufacturing expanded 9.2%, and financial services grew 12.1%. Private consumption rose 7.1% year-on-year, while private investment growth accelerated to close to 12% from 5.8% a year earlier.
The reported figures strengthen the domestic-growth argument for Indian equities, particularly financials, industrials and consumption-linked businesses. That interpretation remains conditional: higher crude can raise inflation and weaken the trade and fiscal balances, limiting how much of the growth surprise can offset the external shock.
The RBI’s special FCNR(B) dollar-rupee swap window ended on August 31. Separately, Punjab National Bank kept its one-year MCLR at 8.80% from September 1 while raising its three-month MCLR by 5 basis points to 8.50%. No new RBI bulk-deposit framework takes effect on September 1; the revised rules are scheduled for October 1.

Global cues and flows
Wall Street closed lower on August 31 as the US-Iran confrontation lifted oil prices and fed expectations of persistent inflation. The US 10-year Treasury yield rose to about 4.76%, while the US dollar index eased. Asian markets were mixed to weaker early on September 1, with Japanese equities under pressure as oil and global yields remained elevated; Chinese manufacturing data offered a partial offset, with the RatingDog manufacturing PMI rising to 51.5 in August from 50.9 in July.
For India, the cross-asset combination is uncomfortable: costlier crude threatens the rupee and corporate margins, while higher US yields can reduce the relative appeal of emerging-market assets. The rupee nevertheless ended August 31 stronger at Rs 95.17 per dollar, with market participants also citing possible RBI support.
Institutional flows were volatile around the month-end rebalance. Provisional data showed foreign investors as net sellers of Rs 7,985.88 crore in Indian equities on August 31, while domestic institutions bought a net Rs 4,588.88 crore. The domestic bid absorbed part of the foreign selling but did not fully offset it, helping explain the benchmark decline and the sharp stock-specific dispersion.
Companies
Corporate developments
The principal corporate development was at HDFC Bank, where Jagdishan’s decision not to seek reappointment removes the immediate uncertainty over a further term but opens a succession process. The bank said its board would fast-track the selection of a successor. Market reaction was positive initially but reversed during the session, indicating that the transition remains an important stock-specific issue.
Sterlite Technologies secured a $288 million long-term supply agreement from a hyperscaler, with deliveries scheduled across calendar years 2027 to 2029 and a possible two-year extension. It also reported record first-quarter financial year 2026-27 revenue of Rs 1,910 crore and EBITDA of Rs 397 crore, up 87% and 184% year-on-year respectively. Its open order book stood at Rs 18,618 crore and EBITDA margin was 20.8%; no external consensus comparison was available in the material.
NCC reported three August orders worth a total of Rs 430.19 crore, excluding GST. Ashoka Buildcon received a Rs 602.16 crore letter of acceptance from Rail Vikas Nigam for an electromechanical system, while Avantel secured a Rs 117.88 crore DRDO contract for a ground-segment communications hub. These disclosures provide company-specific support to parts of the infrastructure and industrial universe despite the sector’s weak market performance.
Ather Energy launched the Konarc electric scooter at Rs 99,999. PVR INOX approved a buyback of up to 20,68,965 shares at Rs 1,450 a share, for an aggregate amount of up to Rs 300 crore. On the negative side, India Ratings placed Indo Borax’s bank facilities on negative rating watch following the announced Kronox Lab acquisition.
What matters next
What to watch this morning
The September 1 calendar combines the strong domestic GDP print with the August manufacturing PMI release and the continuation of the primary-market pipeline. The material available does not include the final India manufacturing PMI reading, so its market impact cannot yet be assessed against an actual figure.
Primary-market activity is likely to remain visible. Deepa Jewellers and Fly-Hi Maritime Travels open, ESDS Software Solution closes, and several companies are scheduled to list. The concentration of issues and listings may keep liquidity selective, particularly in smaller companies, although the material does not provide a quantified estimate of the cash absorbed by the pipeline.
Investors will also track August automobile sales and the next signals on West Asia, crude and US interest-rate expectations. These factors matter for the balance between the domestic-growth impulse from the GDP data and the external pressure from energy prices and global yields.
