Nifty snaps seven-session slide as global bond fears ease
Financials and technology led the rebound, but hawkish RBI minutes, higher crude and a renewed rise in US yields keep the morning setup mixed.
The previous session's recovery reflected easing global bond-market stress, short covering and domestic institutional support more than a change in the earnings outlook. RBI minutes introduced a more hawkish rate risk, while July's macro data showed firm but moderating core-sector growth. For the morning session, the key tension is between domestic support from financials and corporate activity and renewed pressure from US yields, crude and foreign selling.

The session
Indian equities ended a seven-session losing run as a stabilisation in global bond markets improved risk appetite. The US Treasury's plan to raise the size of certain long-duration bond buybacks from $2 billion to at least $4 billion per operation from September 9 initially pushed US yields lower, supporting rate-sensitive financials and technology stocks in India.
The domestic rebound was also associated with short covering after the recent decline and a stronger rupee. The move was broad, with NBFCs and insurers leading the sectoral performance. LIC's approval from the Reserve Bank of India to raise its holding in HDFC Bank to 9.99% gave an additional stock-specific signal for financials.

Key drivers
What moved the market
Market participants attributed the benchmark recovery to easing global yield pressure rather than to a fresh domestic earnings catalyst. Eternal, Kotak Mahindra Bank and Shriram Finance were among the stronger Nifty names, while Infosys, TCS, HCL Technologies and Wipro benefited from buying in information technology. Bajaj Finance and Hindustan Unilever were also cited among the notable gainers.
Telecom and internet shares participated in the risk-on move, while cement and materials were supported by the infrastructure backdrop and the July core-sector release, in which cement and iron ore were reported as leading contributors. Oil and energy shares lagged as crude remained elevated amid geopolitical tensions. Metals were weaker despite the broader market recovery, indicating that the session was not a uniform commodity-sector rally.

Policy and macro
The RBI's August meeting minutes shifted the rate debate. The minutes showed policymakers more concerned about inflation risks, with Governor Sanjay Malhotra saying that evidence of broader spillovers could justify policy tightening. The reported interpretation was that a rate hike could come into play if inflation risks persist, although SBI Research said robust growth and easing inflation still supported a prolonged pause through financial year 2026-27.
The bond market reacted before equities did: the benchmark 10-year government bond yield settled at 6.87%, up from the previous close, according to Business Standard. That is a potential headwind for rate-sensitive borrowers, but Thursday's equity session was dominated by the temporary relief from lower US yields.
SEBI chairman Tuhin Kanta Pandey said the regulator was reviewing securities lending and borrowing and short-selling frameworks and was working on a framework to support global fund-management activity from India. Reuters separately reported that SEBI was considering lower collateral requirements for liquid cash equities and longer-dated derivatives, though the proposals were still under discussion and could take nine months to roll out.
The regulator also barred Copthall Mauritius Investment, a JPMorgan-owned entity, and Mansi Share and Stock Broking from the securities market until further orders over alleged manipulative trading linked to the Closing Auction Session. SEBI said the combined amount impounded was Rs 3.68 crore. The entities can challenge the order before the Securities Appellate Tribunal.

Global cues and flows
The global backdrop is less supportive for the Indian open than it was during Thursday's domestic session. US equities fell on August 20 as Treasury yields rebounded and oil prices rose. Reports also cited disappointing Walmart results and renewed inflation concerns as additional pressure points.
The initial bond-market relief from the US Treasury buyback plan therefore proved temporary. For India, the implication is two-sided: lower yields had supported technology and financial stocks during the previous session, but a renewed rise in US yields can restore pressure on foreign flows and valuation-sensitive segments. Elevated crude remains an additional risk for India's inflation and external balances.
Foreign institutional investors were provisional net sellers of Indian equities worth Rs 583 crore on August 20, while domestic institutional investors were net buyers worth Rs 3,538 crore. The divergence matters because domestic buying provided a buffer even as overseas flows remained a drag. Asian markets had rallied after the Treasury announcement, but the reversal in Wall Street yields leaves the opening cue mixed rather than uniformly positive.

Macro signals
India's consumer price inflation was reported at 4.45% for July 2026, broadly in line with market expectations. SBI Research said imported inflation eased to 7.3% in July from 8.1% in June. The same research note expected inflation to rise to around 4.7% in August and said it could briefly move above 6% in October and November before moderating in the fourth quarter of financial year 2026-27.
Growth in the eight-core infrastructure industries moderated to 5.4% year-on-year in July from 6% in June, according to provisional data. Cement and iron ore were among the leading contributors. The core industries account for 40.27% of the Index of Industrial Production basket, so the reading provides a mixed signal: activity remained firm, but momentum eased from the previous month.
No fresh CPI, IIP, GST, trade or PMI release for August 21 was identified in the available material beyond these July data points. The July trade data cited estimated total exports of $80.14 billion and imports of $95.16 billion, implying a trade deficit of $15.03 billion.
