Covid-era bargains in largecaps, bull market valuations in smallcaps: Where is the real opportunity in stocks?
Indian markets moved lower in a quarterly results development.
6 Oct 2026 · ET Stocks, Economic Times Markets
Indian equities are split sharply between largecaps and smaller stocks. The Nifty is down 14% in 2026, while midcaps have fallen just 2%, smallcaps have gained 8% and microcaps 15%. Record FPI selling of ₹2.8 lakh crore has hit largecaps hardest, making beaten-down largecaps look relatively attractive while elevated smallcap valuations leave little room for earnings disappointment.
The analysis
This is an Index / institutional flows event. Passive and institutional flows move price independently of fundamentals, and around rebalancing dates they dominate it.
Because the driver here is macro rather than company-specific, the read-through is to index-level positioning rather than to any single name — correlations tend to rise when the whole market faces the same signal.
Market context
- This is a market-wide development — its reach goes beyond any single stock.
