Not just RIL, Jio's ₹11 trn IPO could benefit Airtel investors; here's why

Jio’s listing may validate telecom valuations and widen investor interest, although a competing heavyweight could also redirect institutional allocations away from Bharti Airtel.

Jio IPO: The key debate going into the JPL IPO is its potential impact on Bharti, as there could be a shift in telecom sector allocations with another large listed investable option.

Jio Platforms is being positioned for a prospective public offering associated with Rs 11 trillion, creating a second large listed telecom choice alongside Bharti Airtel in India. The development matters directly to Reliance Industries, which was quoted at Rs 1,211.00 after falling 0.6% on Wednesday, and to Bharti Airtel, at Rs 1,819.20 after gaining 0.5%. Reliance has declined 7.5% in one month and 7.4% in three months, while Airtel has fallen 2.0% and 5.7% over those periods. They remain 24% and 16% below their respective 52 week highs.

A Jio listing could help Airtel shareholders if the offering establishes a transparent sector valuation, broadens institutional interest and prompts investors to compare operating quality across the two telecom businesses. It could also work the other way, as funds may shift allocations from Airtel to the new investable option. Telecom and Media has risen 4.2% in one month and 9.9% in three months, versus a 1.1% fall and 0.7% gain for Oil and Energy, making the allocation debate relevant to both companies. Strong IPO demand and Airtel resilience would confirm the reading. Weak demand, allocation losses or renewed competitive pricing pressure would weaken it.
