Tata Steel seeks fresh UK government funding as Port Talbot project faces delays
Tata Steel secured new business in an infrastructure development.
· Business Today Mkts, BS Companies
Tata Steel approached the Department for Business, Innovation and Science in recent weeks to discuss additional government support, according to the report. The request comes on top of the £500 million government grant awarded to Tata Steel in 2023 as part of a £1.25 billion investment to build an electric arc furnace (EAF) at Port Talbot.
The analysis
Against that, the stock is -2.5% on the day at ₹171.30, and has returned -8.3% over three months. It sits 22% below its 52-week high. The metals & mining sector has moved -4.3% over the same period, so Tata Steel is running 4.0 points behind its peers.
For Tata Steel, the question is how much of this is already reflected in the price and how much re-rates the metals & mining peer set alongside it.
Why it matters
- Infra spending is both an economic-cycle signal and a direct order pipeline for capital-goods names.
- A large order lengthens revenue visibility, which is what the market pays a premium for in capital-goods and infra names.
Market context
- The company directly in focus is TATASTEEL.
- Sector exposure: Metals & Mining.
