The CBI has filed a charge sheet before a Special CBI court in Mumbai against Reliance Communications, two former Reliance ADA Group executives and LIC's former chief investment officer. The case concerns an alleged wrongful loss of Rs 3,750 crore to LIC. The agency said its investigation found that LIC subscribed to Rs 1,500 crore of non convertible debentures issued by Reliance Communications in 2012, allegedly on the basis of serious misrepresentations. Amitabh Jhunjhunwala, Vishwas Joshi and P. Venugopal were named alongside the company. The alleged offences include criminal conspiracy, cheating and criminal breach of trust under the IPC.

The proceedings may sharpen scrutiny of investment controls at insurers and of disclosures by heavily indebted corporate borrowers, particularly in telecom and financial services. Any market effect would probably work through concerns about governance, credit appraisal and potential legal liabilities rather than the charge sheet alone. Reliance Communications and entities directly connected to the accused are the clearest exposures. No direct link to Reliance Industries is provided, so its Rs 1,211.80 price and 2.1% rise should not be treated as evidence of exposure. Court findings, recoveries or regulatory action would strengthen the reading, while dismissal of charges or evidence of limited financial consequences would weaken it.
