Smirnoff Ice enters India as United Spirits bets on ready-to-drink market
United Spirits launched an initiative.
· LiveMint Companies
The company has introduced two variants - Smirnoff Ice and Smirnoff Ice Max - with alcohol by volume (ABV) of 4% and 8%, respectively, in flavours including Jamun, Cranberry and Citrus. To begin with, the company has started sales in Goa, Bengaluru and Mumbai.
The analysis
United Spirits reported movement of 4% and 8%. Those are the figures as filed — what moves the price is how they sit against what the market already expected, not their absolute size.
Against that, the stock is -1.9% on the day at ₹1,318.20, and has returned -6.4% over three months. It sits 15% below its 52-week high. The fmcg sector has moved -4.2% over the same period, so United Spirits is running 2.2 points behind its peers.
For United Spirits, the question is how much of this is already reflected in the price and how much re-rates the fmcg peer set alongside it.
Market context
- The company directly in focus is UNITDSPR.
- Sector exposure: FMCG.
