Canara Bank Shares Fall 6% After Call Flags Up To Rs 15,000 Crore ECL Provision
Canara Bank flagged a risk in a banking & credit development.
· NDTV Profit
Managing Director and CEO Rajesh Kumar Singh said the bank's estimated one-time ECL provision could range from Rs 12,000 crore to Rs 15,000 crore, up by around Rs 3,000 crore from its earlier estimate.
The analysis
Canara Bank reported Rs 15,000 Crore, Rs 12,000 crore and Rs 3,000 crore, with movement of 6% attached to those lines. Those are the figures as filed — what moves the price is how they sit against what the market already expected, not their absolute size.
Against that, the stock is -5.2% on the day at ₹118.26, and has returned -5.9% over three months. It sits 26% below its 52-week high, which means a good deal of bad news was already in the price. The banks sector has moved -3.1% over the same period, so Canara Bank is running 2.8 points behind its peers.
For Canara Bank, the question is how much of this is already reflected in the price and how much re-rates the banks peer set alongside it.
