HDFC Bank set out an expansion in a quarterly results development.
· ET Stocks, Economic Times Markets
Value of new business (VNB) margin expanded 20 basis points to 24.7% against 24.5% a year ago. One basis point is a hundredth of a percentage point. Value of new business grew 12% to ₹2,040 crore.
The analysis
HDFC Bank reported ₹2,040 crore, with movement of 14%, 12% and 24.7% attached to those lines. Those are the figures as filed — what moves the price is how they sit against what the market already expected, not their absolute size.
Against that, the stock is +2.3% on the day at ₹726.85, and has returned -10.9% over three months. It sits 28% below its 52-week high, which means a good deal of bad news was already in the price. The banks sector has moved -4.0% over the same period, so HDFC Bank is running 6.9 points behind its peers.
For HDFC Bank, the question is how much of this is already reflected in the price and how much re-rates the banks peer set alongside it.
Why it matters
- Earnings versus expectations is what actually re-rates a stock; the surprise matters more than the absolute number.
Market context
- The company directly in focus is HDFCBANK.
- Sector exposure: Banks, Insurance.
