Rupee rises 20 paise to 94.79 against US dollar in early trade
RBI moved lower.
· Economic Times Markets
The rupee reached 94.79 against the US dollar following structural forex interventions by the Reserve Bank of India. Elevated crude oil prices and declining equity markets limited the currency's gains. The dollar index decreased by 0.54 per cent, reflecting the dollar's weakened strength. While US retail sales exceeded forecasts, the Producer Price Index was unexpectedly high.
The analysis
RBI reported movement of 0.54%. Those are the figures as filed — what moves the price is how they sit against what the market already expected, not their absolute size.
Against that, the stock is +1.3% on the day at ₹132.04, and has returned -10.2% over three months. It sits 26% below its 52-week high, which means a good deal of bad news was already in the price. The banks sector has moved -4.0% over the same period, so Bank of India is running 6.2 points behind its peers.
This is an Input cost / crude event. India imports most of its crude, so input costs pass through to margins downstream and to the rupee. Producers and consumers of the same input move in opposite directions. On the day the stock is +1.3%, so a modest reaction.
