Hindustan Zinc shares drop 4% as India allows large silver imports despite weak demand

Hindustan Zinc moved lower.

· ET Stocks, Economic Times Markets

Hindustan Zinc shares fell sharply on Friday after India issued permits to import 6,500 metric tonnes of silver over the next six months to meet festive-season demand. The move could ease domestic premiums amid weak demand, while silver futures declined around 3%. The stock is down over 18% so far in 2026.

Hindustan Zinc reported movement of 4%, 3% and 18%. Those are the figures as filed — what moves the price is how they sit against what the market already expected, not their absolute size.

Against that, the stock is -4.1% on the day at ₹496.75, and has returned -3.2% over three months. It sits 32% below its 52-week high, which means a good deal of bad news was already in the price. The metals & mining sector has moved -6.9% over the same period, so Hindustan Zinc is running 3.7 points ahead of its peers.

For Hindustan Zinc, the question is how much of this is already reflected in the price and how much re-rates the metals & mining peer set alongside it.
