The analysis
Hindustan Petroleum reported ₹50,000 cr, ₹1,000 cr and Rs 50,000 crore, with movement of 74%, 26% and 105 basis points attached to those lines. Those are the figures as filed — what moves the price is how they sit against what the market already expected, not their absolute size.
Against that, the stock is -1.8% on the day at ₹334.55, and has returned -13.8% over three months. It sits 33% below its 52-week high, which means a good deal of bad news was already in the price. The oil & energy sector has moved -5.7% over the same period, so Hindustan Petroleum is running 8.1 points behind its peers.
This is an Asset quality / margins event. For lenders the headline profit is the least informative line. Slippages, credit cost and margin direction determine whether the quarter is repeatable. On the day the stock is -1.8%, so a modest reaction.
Why it matters
- Earnings versus expectations is what actually re-rates a stock; the surprise matters more than the absolute number.
Market context
- The company directly in focus is HINDPETRO.
- Sector exposure: Oil & Energy.
