Vedanta Oil and Gas shares jump 14% in 2 days, m-cap swells by Rs 1,600 crore after Q2 results

Vedanta moved higher in a quarterly results development.

· Economic Times Markets, ET Stocks

Vedanta Oil and Gas shares jumped 6% on Monday after rallying 8.5% in the previous session, adding nearly Rs 1,600 crore to its market capitalisation. The gains followed a strong Q2 performance, with the company reporting a net profit of Rs 746 crore against a loss of Rs 91 crore a year ago, despite a sequential decline.

Vedanta reported Rs 1,600 crore, Rs 746 crore and Rs 91 crore, with movement of 6%, 14% and 8.5% attached to those lines. Those are the figures as filed — what moves the price is how they sit against what the market already expected, not their absolute size.

Against that, the stock is +2.0% on the day at ₹242.58, and has returned -8.2% over three months. It sits 32% below its 52-week high, which means a good deal of bad news was already in the price. The metals & mining sector has moved -9.5% over the same period, so Vedanta is running 1.3 points ahead of its peers.

For Vedanta, the question is how much of this is already reflected in the price and how much re-rates the metals & mining peer set alongside it.

  • Earnings versus expectations is what actually re-rates a stock; the surprise matters more than the absolute number.
  • In focus: Vedanta (VEDL), in Metals & Mining.
  • Over three months: Vedanta -8.2% against Metals & Mining -9.5% (1.3 points ahead).
  • At least 25% below the 52-week high: Vedanta (32%).
  • Vedanta: 52-week and period figures are measured from 30 Apr 2026, when its price was reset by a corporate action (such as a demerger or split).
