ITC shares jump 6% in two days after Q2 results. More upside ahead?

NSE moved higher in a quarterly results development.

· Economic Times Markets, ET Stocks

ITC shares rose to Rs 283.5 apiece on NSE on Wednesday morning, the highest level seen by the stock in nearly three months. The stock has now recovered more than 12% in five sessions after hitting a 52-week low of Rs 253 apiece in late October.

NSE reported Rs 283.5 and Rs 253, with movement of 6% and 12% attached to those lines. Those are the figures as filed — what moves the price is how they sit against what the market already expected, not their absolute size.

Against that, the stock is +2.4% on the day at ₹280.40, and has returned -4.6% over three months. It sits 32% below its 52-week high, which means a good deal of bad news was already in the price. The fmcg sector has moved -7.7% over the same period, so ITC is running 3.1 points ahead of its peers.

For ITC, the question is how much of this is already reflected in the price and how much re-rates the fmcg peer set alongside it.

  • Earnings versus expectations is what actually re-rates a stock; the surprise matters more than the absolute number.
  • With NSE involved, this carries a regulatory dimension that can outlast the immediate market reaction.
  • In focus: ITC (ITC), in FMCG.
  • Over three months: ITC -4.6% against FMCG -7.7% (3.1 points ahead).
  • At least 25% below the 52-week high: ITC (32%).
