Tata Power commissions 300 MW solar project in Karnataka, to cut 1 lakh tonnes of carbon emissions yearly

Tata Power moved lower in an energy transition development.

· LiveMint Companies

Once operational, the solar project is expected to produce 810 million units (MUs) of renewable electricity annually. It is also estimated to prevent around 103,820 tonnes of carbon emissions every year.

Against that, the stock is -3.3% on the day at ₹352.50, and has returned -6.9% over three months. It sits 24% below its 52-week high. The power sector has moved -10.9% over the same period, so Tata Power is running 4.0 points ahead of its peers.

This is a Capacity / capex event. Capacity added into a soft cycle compresses returns for the whole sector; added into a tight one it is the cheapest growth available. The cycle position matters more than the announcement. On the day the stock is -3.3%, so the market took notice.

For Tata Power, the question is how much of this is already reflected in the price and how much re-rates the power peer set alongside it.

  • The shift to renewables is redrawing which energy names are structural winners versus stranded.
  • In focus: Tata Power (TATAPOWER), in Power.
  • Over three months: Tata Power -6.9% against Power -10.9% (4.0 points ahead).
  • Trading well above normal today: Tata Power at 2.2 times its 20-day average volume.
