Indian shares set for lower open as oil rise weighs; Jio market debut in focus

Reliance Industries moved higher in a monetary policy development.

· LiveMint Markets

Oil prices climbed 1.6% to $115.7 a barrel after an attack on a refinery in top exporter Saudi Arabia renewed concerns about energy supply disruptions and inflation.

Reliance Industries reported movement of 1.6%. Those are the figures as filed — what moves the price is how they sit against what the market already expected, not their absolute size.

Against that, the stock is -0.5% on the day at ₹1,190.70, and has returned -6.5% over three months. It sits 25% below its 52-week high, which means a good deal of bad news was already in the price. The oil & energy sector has moved -3.0% over the same period, so Reliance Industries is running 3.5 points behind its peers.

For Reliance Industries, the question is how much of this is already reflected in the price and how much re-rates the oil & energy peer set alongside it.

  • Rate decisions ripple straight into banks, NBFCs and every rate-sensitive sector — from real estate to autos.
  • In focus: Reliance Industries (Jio) (RELIANCE), in Oil & Energy.
  • Over three months: Reliance Industries (Jio) -6.5% against Oil & Energy -3.0% (3.5 points behind).
  • At least 25% below the 52-week high: Reliance Industries (Jio) (25%).
