Will RBI’s CRR hike to 99% hit HDFC, SBI and other bank stocks? Here’s what Jefferies says

RBI moved higher in a monetary policy development with October 16 in focus.

· Economic Times Markets

The RBI has raised the minimum daily CRR maintenance requirement to 99% from 90% from October 16 to curb banking system liquidity. Jefferies expects a limited impact on banks’ net interest margins, estimating a potential 1-2 basis point increase in funding costs. It prefers banks over NBFCs in a rising-rate environment and sees up to 47% upside in Bandhan Bank.

RBI reported movement of 99%, 90% and 47%. Those are the figures as filed — what moves the price is how they sit against what the market already expected, not their absolute size.

Against that, the stock is +0.1% on the day at ₹707.95, and has returned -13.5% over three months. It sits 30% below its 52-week high, which means a good deal of bad news was already in the price. The banks sector has moved -2.2% over the same period, so HDFC Bank is running 11.3 points behind its peers.

This is a Rate / liquidity policy event. Rate direction moves bank margins and the discount rate applied to every long-duration asset. The commentary usually matters more than the decision, which is often already priced. On the day the stock is +0.1%, so the price barely moved, which suggests this was expected or is seen as immaterial.

  • Rate decisions ripple straight into banks, NBFCs and every rate-sensitive sector — from real estate to autos.
  • Earnings versus expectations is what actually re-rates a stock; the surprise matters more than the absolute number.
  • With RBI involved, this carries a regulatory dimension that can outlast the immediate market reaction.
  • It touches several names at once (HDFCBANK, SBIN, BANDHANBNK), which points to a sector-level rather than company-specific driver.
  • Sector exposure: Banks.
