Insurance stocks are down 20%, but Anil Ghelani sees a contrarian opportunity. Here’s why
IRDAI is in focus in a mutual funds development.
· Economic Times Markets
The proposed changes to commissions and distribution by the Insurance Regulatory and DevelopmentAuthority of India (IRDAI) have added to investor uncertainty, raising concernsover the economics of insurers, agents and digital platforms. But Anil Ghelani, executive director and head of passives and product at DSP Mutual Fund, sees no structural deterioration in the business model.
The analysis
IRDAI reported movement of 20%. Those are the figures as filed — what moves the price is how they sit against what the market already expected, not their absolute size.
This is a Capacity / capex event. Capacity added into a soft cycle compresses returns for the whole sector; added into a tight one it is the cheapest growth available. The cycle position matters more than the announcement.
Why it matters
- Fund flows and NAV moves show where domestic retail conviction is actually going, month after month.
- With IRDAI involved, this carries a regulatory dimension that can outlast the immediate market reaction.
Market context
- Sector exposure: Insurance.
