FPIs withdraw Rs 48,056 cr from equities in Oct so far amid elevated crude oil prices
A monetary policy development with market-wide reach.
· Economic Times Markets, Business Standard Mkts, ET Stocks
Foreign investors withdrew significant funds from Indian equities in October amid concerns over inflation and crude oil prices. Despite this, there were signs of moderation in selling with two days of net buying. The overall FPI outflows from equities in 2026 have reached notable levels compared to previous years.
The analysis
This is an Input cost / crude event. India imports most of its crude, so input costs pass through to margins downstream and to the rupee. Producers and consumers of the same input move in opposite directions.
Because the driver here is macro rather than company-specific, the read-through is to index-level positioning rather than to any single name — correlations tend to rise when the whole market faces the same signal.
Market context
- This is a market-wide development — its reach goes beyond any single stock.
