FII retreat deepens: Almost every second Nifty stock sees stake cuts in all 3 quarters of 2026
Indian markets moved higher in an institutional flows development.
· ET Stocks, Economic Times Markets
This year has seen Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) divest nearly ₹3 lakh crore in Indian equities, causing a significant reduction in their stakes. As a result, FII ownership has declined in about half of the Nifty stocks over the past three quarters.
The analysis
This is an Index / institutional flows event. Passive and institutional flows move price independently of fundamentals, and around rebalancing dates they dominate it.
Because the driver here is macro rather than company-specific, the read-through is to index-level positioning rather than to any single name — correlations tend to rise when the whole market faces the same signal.
Market context
- A market-wide development: it reaches beyond any single stock.
