The book filled fast

Recent large IPO comparables
42% and 18%Reuters compared NSE's and Hyundai Motor India's first-day subscription rates.

Jio Platforms' ₹30,213 crore initial public offering was fully subscribed within about 100 minutes of opening on Wednesday, October 21, and bids had already passed the shares on offer by early afternoon. Institutional investors covered their reserved tranche in 10 minutes, while the overall book was far quicker than recent large Indian flotations such as the NSE and Hyundai Motor India, which were only 42% and 18% subscribed on day one. That speed matters because it shows how much market weight still attaches to the Reliance name, but also because Jio is not a speculative tale. It is a profitable, large-scale telecom and digital business that institutions can model. The rush says demand exists. It does not prove the price is generous.

Speed shows appetite, but not that the issue is cheap.

Scale explains the rush

Customers served
524.4 millionReliance Jio Infocomm customer base as of March 31, 2026.
Revenue from operations
₹1,46,885.3 croreJio Platforms year ended March 31, 2026.
Profit after tax
₹30,049.1 croreJio Platforms year ended March 31, 2026.
Net leverage
0.36xJio Platforms year ended March 31, 2026.

The appeal is visible in the prospectus numbers. Reliance Jio Infocomm served 524.4 million customers as of March 31, 2026. Jio Platforms reported revenue from operations of ₹1,46,885.3 crore in the year to March 31, 2026, EBITDA of ₹76,255.4 crore and profit after tax of ₹30,049.1 crore, with net leverage of 0.36x. This is not a business asking investors to fund an unproven network. It already has scale, profits and a balance sheet that is not stretched. Jio also says it offers mobile and fixed broadband, digital services and AI-based products, which gives the IPO a growth story beyond plain telecom. That is why the book filled so fast.

The business already has scale, profits and low leverage.

The offer gives exposure, not an exit

Fresh issue size
270 million sharesNo offer for sale was planned.

What the IPO gives investors is a minority claim on future cash flow, not a ticket into an exit by the promoter. The issue is a fresh issue of up to 270 million shares; sale size is not applicable. Jio said the net proceeds will go mainly to prepay borrowings at Reliance Jio Infocomm Limited, the telecom subsidiary, and to general corporate purposes, with the listing itself creating a public market for the shares. That matters. It means the money is being used to strengthen the operating company, not to let existing owners cash out. For an investor, the upside case depends on whether debt reduction and public-market scrutiny translate into better returns on capital. If they do not, the issue simply swaps private balance-sheet risk for public-market valuation risk.

The IPO is a funding and listing event, not a promoter cash-out.

The bear case is real

Revenue from telecom
More than 90%Reuters report on October 21, 2026.

The strongest case against the enthusiasm is that Jio is still mainly a telecom business. Reuters reported that more than 90% of its revenue comes from telecoms. The prospectus also lists licence and spectrum renewal risk, technological obsolescence, and extensive regulation by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India and the Department of Telecommunications. It warns that network disruption or weaker service could shrink the customer base and hurt results. That risk profile matters because telecom is capital hungry and heavily regulated, and because the IPO will not remove those demands. The rush to the book may reflect confidence in the Reliance franchise as much as conviction about the economics of telecom. Those are related, but not identical, forms of belief.

Regulation and telecom concentration limit the upside case.

The listing will settle it

Issue period
October 21 to 23, 2026As reported by Reuters.
Indicative listing date
October 28, 2026Reuters said trading is due to begin then.

The market will decide whether day-one demand was broad conviction or a first rush to get into a scarce name. The issue closes on Friday, October 23, and Reuters said Jio is due to start trading on October 28. If demand stays strong to the end of the book and the stock finds support after listing, the IPO will have shown that India can still digest a huge telecom and digital sale without a discount for size. If it does not, the speed of the first two hours will look less like a verdict on value and more like a brand premium. That is the real test for investors, not the stopwatch on Wednesday morning.

The close and listing will show whether demand was broad or impulsive.
