Reading the rates
- 24K, 22K and 18K
- Karat is the share of pure gold: 24K is 99.9% gold, 22K is 91.6% and 18K is 75%. Jewellery is usually 22K; coins and bars are 24K.
- Per 10 grams and per gram
- Gold is quoted per 10 grams in India, and per gram for smaller purchases. Silver is quoted per kilogram and per 10 grams.
- What a jeweller adds
- The rates here are before GST, which is 3% on gold and silver, and before making charges, which each jeweller sets for the design and the work.
- Hallmarking
- Hallmarked jewellery carries the BIS mark, its purity in karats (such as 22K916) and a six-digit HUID code that identifies the piece.
