Trent’s Rs 1.80 lakh crore rout from peak: Has Q2 just flipped the script for Tata group’s retail crown jewel?

In Q2FY27, Trent demonstrated impressive financial performance, achieving a remarkable 23% increase in revenue compared to the previous year. This achievement is particularly noteworthy given the challenges other retailers faced during the festive period.

The analysis
Trent recorded a 23% year on year increase in revenue in Q2FY27, while continuing to add stores under its Zudio and Westside formats. The performance came despite a difficult festive trading backdrop for other retailers, strengthening the case that its value and department store propositions retained demand. Even so, the stock was at Rs 2,895.60, down 0.4% for the day, up 2.5% over one month and down 1.5% over three months. It remained 40% below its 52 week high, with the erosion in market value from the peak put at Rs 1.80 lakh crore.
For Indian markets, the central issue is whether faster sales reflect durable market share gains and productive new stores, rather than expansion alone. If established outlets sustain growth while margins, inventory and cash generation remain sound, Trent's result could improve sentiment toward apparel retail, mall operators, suppliers and logistics businesses. The broader Consumer and Retail sector was down 5.4% over one month and 3.0% over three months, so sustained quarterly delivery would offer useful confirmation. Financial Services fell 8.5% and 8.3% over the same periods respectively, signalling weak wider risk appetite. Slower revenue momentum, poor store productivity or margin pressure would weaken the recovery reading.
