Sensex, Nifty soar to a two-month high as FPIs ramp up buying activity

HDFC Bank is in focus.

· ET Stocks, Economic Times Markets

Indian benchmark indices Sensex and Nifty closed at their highest levels in nearly two months. Foreign investors have been net buying Indian equities, contributing to market gains over the past sessions. HDFC Bank was a significant contributor to the Nifty's gains, along with other major stocks like ICICI Bank. Decreasing crude oil prices have improved market sentiment among investors recently.

Against that, the stock is +3.6% on the day at ₹725.50, and has returned -3.6% over three months. It sits 28% below its 52-week high, which means a good deal of bad news was already in the price. The banks sector has moved -7.4% over the same period, so HDFC Bank is running 3.8 points ahead of its peers.

This is an Input cost / crude event. India imports most of its crude, so input costs pass through to margins downstream and to the rupee. Producers and consumers of the same input move in opposite directions. On the day the stock is +3.6%, so the market took notice.

For HDFC Bank, the question is how much of this is already reflected in the price and how much re-rates the banks peer set alongside it.

  • With BSE involved, this carries a regulatory dimension that can outlast the immediate market reaction.
  • In focus: HDFC Bank (HDFCBANK), in Banks.
  • On the day, 2 of 2 are higher: HDFC Bank leads at +3.6% and ICICI Bank trails at +2.7%.
  • Over three months: HDFC Bank -3.6% against Banks -7.4% (3.8 points ahead); ICICI Bank -2.4% against Banks -7.4% (5.0 points ahead).
  • At least 25% below the 52-week high: HDFC Bank (28%).
