The headline improvement is incomplete
- Net loss
- ₹922 croreQ2 FY27, compared with ₹791 crore in Q1 FY27 and ₹1,092 crore in Q2 FY26.
- Revenue from operations
- ₹7,571 croreQ2 FY27, up 36.1% from a year earlier.
- Closing share price
- ₹176 a shareNSE close on 23 October 2026, down 16.75% for the day.
Swiggy reported a ₹922 crore consolidated net loss for the September quarter on Thursday, 22 October, as revenue from operations rose 36.1% from a year earlier to ₹7,571 crore. The loss narrowed from ₹1,092 crore a year ago but widened from ₹791 crore in the June quarter. Consolidated adjusted earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation loss also increased sequentially, to ₹760 crore from ₹651 crore.
The distinction matters because the year-on-year comparison makes the group appear closer to profitability, while the sequential figures show that its newest investments are consuming the gains from its established business. Swiggy shares closed 16.75% lower at ₹176 on Friday. The fall does not prove that the market has valued the company correctly, but it identifies the central concern: faster sales growth has not yet produced lower group losses from one quarter to the next.
The quarterly improvement disappears when Swiggy is compared with the immediately preceding quarter rather than last year.
Food delivery is funding part of the experiment, but it is not yet funding the group.

Food delivery is doing its job
- Food-delivery gross order value
- ₹10,054 croreQ2 FY27, up 17.7% year on year.
- Food-delivery adjusted EBITDA
- ₹341 croreUp from ₹240 crore a year earlier and ₹292 crore in Q1 FY27.
- Food-delivery adjusted EBITDA margin
- 3.4%Measured against gross order value, up 58 basis points year on year.
Swiggy’s core food-delivery operation produced record adjusted EBITDA of ₹341 crore, up from ₹240 crore a year earlier and ₹292 crore in the June quarter. Gross order value rose 17.7% year on year to ₹10,054 crore, while the adjusted EBITDA margin reached 3.4% of gross order value. Swiggy retained its 18% to 20% full-year growth guidance for the business, excluding its budget-meal app Toing.
Those figures support management’s claim that the mature operation has operating leverage. Advertising helped lift the take rate, while September growth exceeded 20%, excluding Toing. Yet an additional ₹49 crore of sequential food-delivery EBITDA covered less than half the ₹117 crore increase in Instamart’s adjusted EBITDA loss. Platform Innovations, which includes Toing, also increased its adjusted EBITDA loss to ₹162 crore from ₹131 crore. Food delivery is funding part of the experiment, but it is not yet funding the group.
Food delivery has become a credible profit engine, but its improvement remains small beside losses elsewhere.
Instamart grew without enough leverage
- Instamart net order value
- ₹6,954 croreQ2 FY27, up 31.4% year on year and 13.4% sequentially.
- Instamart adjusted EBITDA loss
- ₹895 croreCompared with ₹778 crore in Q1 FY27 and ₹849 crore in Q2 FY26.
- Instamart contribution margin
- Minus 1%Improved 157 basis points year on year but deteriorated 82 basis points sequentially.
Instamart’s net order value increased 31.4% year on year and 13.4% sequentially to ₹6,954 crore. Swiggy added 69 dark stores, taking the network to 1,240. But adjusted EBITDA loss widened to ₹895 crore from ₹778 crore in the preceding quarter and ₹849 crore a year earlier. Contribution margin deteriorated by 82 basis points sequentially to minus 1%, although it improved by 157 basis points from a year ago.
The financial mechanism is straightforward. More orders raise revenue, but discounts, delivery costs, underused dark stores and spending to reactivate customers can absorb the extra gross profit. Swiggy said competition remained intense and did not expect it to ease soon. Management nevertheless guided to another quarter of double-digit sequential net-order-value growth, a contribution margin between zero and minus 1%, and an adjusted EBITDA margin improvement of about 100 basis points. The December quarter must deliver growth and better unit economics together.
Instamart’s volume growth is valuable only if customer retention and store productivity improve faster than promotional and operating costs.
The strongest case is that losses have peaked
- Consolidated cash balance
- ₹13,662 croreAt 30 September 2026, down from ₹14,367 crore at the end of June.
- Quarterly cash-balance decline
- ₹705 croreDifference between the company-defined closing balances for Q1 and Q2 FY27.
The best argument against a bearish reading is that Swiggy has already paid much of the cost of resetting Instamart’s growth. Management said it believed the quick-commerce business’s adjusted EBITDA loss peaked in the September quarter. It expects better customer quality, retention and ordering frequency to support margins, rather than relying solely on slower expansion. Food-delivery profit is also rising, giving the group an internal source of funding.
Swiggy ended September with a company-defined consolidated cash balance of ₹13,662 crore, against ₹14,367 crore three months earlier. That liquidity gives it room to mature stores and improve delivery density without an immediate financing constraint. Management also said it would prioritise a resilient business and a clear path to EBITDA break-even before using cash for aggressive expansion. The counterargument changes the conclusion from a balance-sheet warning to an execution test. Swiggy can afford another difficult quarter. It has not yet shown that the next quarter will be less difficult.
The balance sheet gives Swiggy time to improve Instamart, and one quarter of successful margin delivery would strengthen the opposing case materially.
The next quarter must validate the peak
- Expected margin change
- About 100 basis points betterManagement guidance for Q3 FY27 Instamart adjusted EBITDA margin.
Management’s forecast is now unusually testable. Instamart must produce double-digit sequential net-order-value growth while keeping contribution margin between zero and minus 1% and improving adjusted EBITDA margin by about 100 basis points. If those conditions occur together, the September loss may indeed prove to have been the high point. If volume grows but absolute losses remain close to ₹895 crore, Swiggy will have shown scale without sufficient operating leverage.
Toing adds a second test. Swiggy acknowledged that the budget-meal app shifted some demand away from its main food-delivery service, an effect it had not anticipated. Two in three new Toing users were either new to Swiggy or long dormant, which supports the case for expanding the market. But Platform Innovations’ loss still widened sequentially. Investors therefore need separate evidence that Toing brings incremental customers rather than merely cheaper orders and additional costs. Swiggy’s results for the quarter ending 31 December 2026 will decide whether management’s loss-peak claim survives contact with its own guidance.
The December-quarter margin outcome matters more than another increase in order value.
